Sink or swim
Body composition, including muscle mass, fat mass, and bone mineral density - plays a significant role in health and sports performance outcomes. Whilst body composition metrics are well established for most land based sports (and healthcare in general), less is known about the implications of altering body composition on swimming performance. Dr Simon Sostaric discusses a series of interesting perspectives to consider; particularly if you are a triathlete, and need to factor in the ideal body composition needs for running and cycling too.
Melbourne Sports & Allied Health Clinic provides body composition evaluation by the highly precise DEXA scan method, as a regular part of its exercise physiology and sports dietetics services. Read more here (5-6min) or download the PDF.
