Taking on the 12-week "Revitalise Challenge": Fitness. Health. Ageing.
Melbourne Sports & Allied Health Clinic integrates high precision science with expert interpretation and guidance, to ensure the most effective health and fitness outcomes are achieved. From the 1st of March (2018), we are offering an exclusive 12-week "Revitalise Challenge". Beneficiaries include those who wish to: lose weight; gain cardiorespiratory fitness and strength; reduce pain and fatigue; reverse the effects of chronic ailments; reduce stress and anxiety; increase energy, vitality, confidence and resilience.
Decades of compelling research has underpinned that targeted physical activity, coupled with maintaining an appropriate body composition, will give you the best opportunity to stave off chronic diseases, and slow down the ageing process.
Indeed, a significant amount of age related health deterioration is a result of medical conditions caused by sedentary lifestyle, rather than the ageing process itself.
Regular physical activity improves physical and cognitive function; reverses the effects of many debilitating conditions; and in the long term, will help keep you functioning at a high capacity as you age.
Evaluating your fitness & body composition
Evaluating maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and body composition (DEXA scan) prior to the start of the 12-week Revitalise Challenge provides baseline data, and enables your expert exercise physiologist to provide physical activity and lifestyle modification guidelines that are specific to your needs, and to ensure that goals are safe, realistic and sustainable. Cardiorespiratory fitness, as measured via the gold standard VO2max test (bike or treadmill), is globally recognised as the best predictor of all-cause morbidity and premature mortality. Increasing your VO2max is achieved with specific exercise sessions, and modified body composition, leading to an improvement in fitness, and reduced risk of developing common diseases, including: cancers; heart disease; type 2 diabetes; dementia; alzheimer's; depression; and others. Body composition (DEXA scan method) evaluates body fat mass, including visceral adipose tissue (VAT) around your organs; lean mass; bone mineral density; and a range of indices that focus on metabolic and musculo-skeletal risk factors. For example, increasing muscle mass correlates strongly with mitigating frailty and increasing longevity. Repeating the VO2max and DEXA evaluations after 12 weeks provides insight into intervention adaptations.
